To KOA between Arcata/Eureka
just about 12 miles, surly ran 5
We left the beach for a nice short ride into Arcata where we'd do some errands/hang out at a coffee shop. Most of the ride was on a bike path which was nice- when it wasn't gravel.....and uphill. Gravel with a trailer is extra not fun.
Picked up some Bob pins-part of Cook's trailer that hold it in't the drop outs. Turns out they tend to slowly bend, letting the trailer rock a little and make a really annoying squeak. Also a new tire for Cook's back wheel so hopefully no more flats!
Then onto the local coop which was HUGE so we ended up buying way more food than we needed- but it was all SO good. We couldn't really find a coffee shop that had what we needed- mainly just a place to sit outside with the dog. So we ended up walking all the way back to the bike shop where we started (walking because it was uphill with a headwind and we didn't have our cycling shoes on- too lazy to change)-but it was well worth it. Muddy Waters coffee shop had a nice deck and great coffee.
All in all, Arcata was a pretty nice town- small with a lot of traveler/hippies/etc types...
We rode 3ish miles to our campsite- a generic KOA. Even though we got there before office hours were closed- no one was there. No one answered the phone number left to call. And there is was no one in the house/trailer where we were susposed to go to get the code for the bathroom... There were hiker/biker sites, but the prices for those weren't listed so we didn't want to pay anything yet (since they are often much cheaper)- after a little bit of standing around we found the sites-and more cyclists! We had seen them in Arcata and they were riding from Arcata to the Bay Area... it ended up being a decent place to camp since itw as behind the building and sort of down a few feet so blocked from all the wind. By late morning it was sunny too!
^^ lots of cows around here...
