March 16th Cannon Beach to Barview

We rode from Cannon Beach to just past Rockaway Beach. This was about 33 miles and took roughly 3 1/2 hours. We saw lots of really amazing views and lots of off and on rain, hail, and sleet. We also had one major climb. The storms, like always, were intermittent and unpredictable. There was lots of putting on and taking off rain gear. The wind was gusting to 50 mph. If you ever get the chance to ride your bike in rain and hail with 50 mph gusts...don't. There was no bike riding to be had.

The climb we did was to just under 800 feet. This was the hardest climb we've had this trip. Of course the weather helped to make this climb even harder. The big thing about this climb is that it started with a tunnel. Oregon has this great tunnel setup for bikers-there is a button at the entrance to the tunnel that you push before entering that lights up a sign to alert motorists that there are people on bikes in the tunnel. Pretty cool huh?

We made our way through the climb and through the weather to arrive at the Barview Jetty County Park. This was a great little camp site. Our site was a cool little round spot surrounded by shrubbery making it nice and isolated.

Everything was wet so making a fire was very difficult. So much time was spent on it and just when it was starting to get going it would start to hail. By the time we got a good fire going it was time for bed. We went to bed and it hailed and rained pretty heavy for most of the night.
