March 4th

We ended up having to start in Seattle- as our rental had to be returned there and we couldn't find an economical way to get to Bellingham. We drove up there just to see it...but then right back to Seattle where we returned the car around 230. It took us a while to pack everything up- we thought we'd have more time but there was a nice break in the weather and there wasn't supposed to be too much rain for the next few days s we wanted to go ahead and get started.

It was about 2 miles from there to the ferry- but all down a super steep hill through rush hour traffic- fun with a heavy trailer! urgh.

(this is how Surly chose to sit in the rental car- not on the blankets/pads next to the seat)

Once we got off the ferry is waspretty much dark- we stopped at a a hotel that was about 3 miles away- but it seemed all uphill...and since it was dark we rode on the sidewalks, which seemed to be covered in a half inch of sand/rocks? We got a big discount on the rate thanks to Cook's awesome negotiating skills :)
